In 1954, she made her TV debut by appearing in the TV series Top Secret. Next year she starred in the TV series like Robert Montgomery Presents, Appointment with Adventure and so on. She rose to fame in the mid 1970s after she portrayed the role of Mabel Longhetti in the movie A Woman Under the Influence. For the film, she got her first Oscar Award nomination and Golden Globe nomination. She was honored with the later one for this role.

In the late 1970s, she appeared in several movies. In 1998, she portrayed the role of Hannah in the movie Playing by Heart and for this role she earned the salary of $60,000. Lately, in 2014, she appeared as Lily Harrison in Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks.
