Tom Petty was married twice. His first marriage was with his childhood girlfriend, Jane Benyo. Petty married his girlfriend Jane Benyo on March 31st, 1974, before he left Florida and moved to California to pursue his music career.
After Petty left his house because of his abusive father, Petty and Benyo started to live together. Petty and Benyo met each other when they were 17 years old. Their marriage lasted for 22 years and together they have two children and both are daughters, Adria Petty, who is a film director and has worked with artists such as Beyoncé and Rihanna and Anna Kim Violette who is an artist.

Benyo and Petty were happily married and everything was going great with them. But, it didn't take long for something beautiful to turn into a complete disaster. This started happening as Tom started getting famous and started touring and promoting his music and Benyo was left at home to look after their two daughters. She felt alone and lost, so to deal with isolation, she started taking help of alcohol and drugs.

One day, Tom arrived home from recordings session to find his wife Jane passed out in the hallway and later found out that it was not only from alcohol. Tom was living a life of a typical rock star and was also involved in drug addiction. All these issues left the family life pretty stressful and left his family life decimated.

His wife, Jane Benyo was mentally ill and their marriage had turned into an abusive relationship, with Benyo verbally abusing Tom and his two daughters.
In 1996, Tom considered canceling an eighteen-month road tour with Bob Dylan to be with his wife Benyo, who was struggling with mental illness at their home in Encino, in the San Fernando Valley. However, his very good pal and also a legendary singer Stevie Nicks convinced him not to do so. Tom took his wife along with him on the road tour and they had a great time there.
After the tour ended, Tom left his family and moved into a house in the Pacific Palisades, but he felt tremendous guilt and pain to leave his family. Jane was having a really tough period and Tom didn’t know how to help her, which led him to depression and he soon became addicted to heroin. His wife, Jane would constantly call him and threaten him if he hung up the phone, and used to tell him that she will commit suicide if he left her.

In a biography about Tom Petty, his daughter Adria revealed that their mom loved her dad very much but her insecurities made her a very abusive and cruel person. Their divorce was finalized on September 9, 1996.
He was all in darkness when he got addicted to heroin and fell into deep depression. He had lost all the hope to find the switch that could light his life. He met Dana York at a concert in Texas in the early 90’s but they didn’t reconnect until 1996.
When Dana's first marriage was over, and guess what? Dana York became that switch to give Petty's life a much-needed brightness. They felt an instant connection between each other as if they had known each other for a long time.
Tom wanted his relation to work with Dana so, he kept his addiction to heroin a secret. Furthermore, he couldn’t deal with the depression and the threatening calls from Jane never ended. At this period, Dana became his saving grace. Dana's father was also an addict and she knew the complications and struggle. After petty admitted his addiction to drugs Petty was hospitalized and during this time Dana stood by him and waited for him to come through. Finally, Petty also mended his relationship with his daughters.
They say love has the power to overcome any obstacle, and with Dana by his side, Petty was now a happy new man.
