Natalie Anne Merchant (born October 26, 1963) is an American singer, musician, and songwriter. She was, once involved with an alternative rock band 10,000 Maniacs in 1981 but she later, left it to begin her solo musical career. She was born to father Anthony Merchant and mother Ann Merchant in Jamestown, New York. Her paternal grandfather, who played the accordion, mandolin, and guitar, immigrated to the United States from Sicily.
Merchant began her singing career in 1981. She was the lead singer and primary lyricist for 10,000 Maniacs, joining the band in its infancy. During that time, she was also a student at Jamestown Community College.They recorded their album Human Conflict Number Five and performed a corresponding Music video at The Hotel Franklin and at Group W Westinghouse studios in 1982. She was the lead vocals a pianist for 10,000 Maniacs for seven studio albums. In 1993 she officially announced her separation from the band to pursue her solo career.
